RBB Leadership Resignations Amid Gelbhaar Reporting Scandal

The Berliner broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) faces a significant leadership shake-up following erroneous reports about Green politician Stefan Gelbhaar. Program director Katrin Günther and chief editor David Biesinger have resigned in response to the mishandling of allegations against Gelbhaar. Despite resigning, Günther will temporarily remain in her role until a successor is appointed. The position of interim chief editor will be filled by Stephanie Pieper.

The controversy erupted when reports surfaced accusing Gelbhaar of misconduct, leading to his removal as a direct candidate for Berlin-Pankow and his withdrawal from the Berlin state list candidacy. However, the primary accusations were later revealed to be fabricated. A woman allegedly involved had submitted a false affidavit under a pseudonym. Other women maintain their allegations, though the specifics remain unclear.

In response, Gelbhaar is pursuing legal action, supported by his party, against these unfounded claims. The RBB, aiming to restore public trust, commissioned an independent investigation into these reporting failures. Intendant Ulrike Demmer emphasized the need to ensure adherence to RBB's journalistic standards and promised structural reforms.

These reforms include mandatory training on reporting suspicions and involving investigative units in future sensitive inquiries. The RBB is determined to take an active role in overseeing such investigations to prevent similar errors. The broadcaster's commitment to these changes underscores its effort to regain credibility and ensure reliable, unbiased reporting.
