Tragic Disturbance in Hohler Fels Cave
A reckless act of igniting fireworks in the Hohler Fels cave has tragically resulted in the death of at least two bats. This vital winter habitat, already vulnerable, faced a similar disturbance during New Year’s celebrations in 2004/05, which delayed the return of bats for over a decade.
Wildlife cameras captured the incident, prompting police investigations into the actions of unidentified individuals. The Albstadt Arge Höhle und Karst, responsible for the cave's care, reported one bat likely perished immediately, while another was found dead in a crevice.
The remaining bats fled in panic, leaving their survival chances bleak. Ongoing visitor traffic poses further risks, potentially endangering more wildlife.
