Meta's AI Assistant Launches Across Europe
Meta has launched its AI assistant, Meta AI, across its platforms including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger in Europe. This rollout, which began on Thursday, covers 41 countries in the region. While Meta introduced the chatbot in the US back in September 2023, the European launch was delayed due to the need to comply with EU regulations. Despite these challenges, Meta is pleased to finally bring this technology to European users.
Unlike standalone apps like ChatGPT, Meta AI is integrated into existing Meta platforms. In the US, users have been able to use it for image creation since April 2024, but in Europe, the AI will initially offer only text functionality. For instance, in WhatsApp, users can seek help with tasks like travel planning. The AI is available in six languages, but notably, it was not trained using data from EU users due to strict data regulations.
Meta has prioritized AI development, planning to invest $60 to $65 billion this year in data centers, servers, and network infrastructure vital for this technology. The company aims to reach one billion users this year, with about 700 million already using the assistant globally. There are also plans for a standalone Meta-AI app in the future.
Meta's commitment to AI reflects a broader industry trend as it seeks to enhance user experience through personalized and innovative features. This expansion into Europe marks a significant step towards achieving its ambitious user growth targets.
