Germany Acts Against Russian Shadow Fleet

Germany has taken decisive action by seizing the oil tanker Eventin, part of Russia's shadow fleet, found adrift in the Baltic Sea. This vessel, which lost power and steering, was secured to prevent an oil spill, with its cargo valued at $43 million.

The EU had previously sanctioned the ship as part of broader measures against Russia. The shadow fleet comprises aging vessels often registered under flags of convenience to evade sanctions, allowing Russia to generate significant oil revenue.

This revenue, estimated at $16.4 billion monthly, supports its economy and military endeavors. With over 400 ships involved, these actions highlight the ongoing efforts to disrupt Russia's oil export capabilities amidst the war in Ukraine.
