Rising Tuberculosis Cases Among Children in Europe
Europe is witnessing a troubling increase in tuberculosis cases among children under 15, with a ten percent rise in 2023. These children now account for 4.3 percent of all new TB cases or recurrences in the EU and European Economic Area.
This marks the third consecutive year of rising TB cases among children in the region. Overall, nearly 37,000 TB cases were diagnosed in Europe in 2023, around 2,000 more than the previous year.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) stress the urgency of addressing this growing health crisis. The spread of antibiotic-resistant TB strains further complicates the situation.
WHO's Hans Kluge emphasized the importance of prevention and early treatment, warning that ignoring the problem will have future consequences. The decline in development aid further threatens efforts to combat the disease, risking a collapse in TB programs in 27 countries.
Effective funding and global cooperation are crucial to control and eventually eradicate tuberculosis.
