Germany's Coalition Talks: Energy and Climate Policy Challenges

Negotiations between Germany's Union and SPD parties have focused on key climate and energy policies. Both parties are committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2045, but differ on execution. The Union suggests offsetting emissions through international partnerships, while the SPD seeks stricter European climate targets.

Central to their discussions is the emissions trading system, which they agree should remain a core policy tool. However, the previously proposed climate money for citizens is off the table, replaced by targeted relief and support for housing and mobility, along with aid for affected industries.

In transportation, there is alignment on promoting electric mobility, though the Union challenges the EU's proposed combustion engine phase-out by 2035. Despite disparities, both parties aim to enhance renewable energy infrastructure and support hydrogen development.
