Sudan's Capital Regained Amid Ongoing Conflict

The prolonged civil war in Sudan has taken a significant turn with the Sudanese military regaining control over the capital, Khartoum. Head of State Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced this pivotal development, marking a momentous victory for the government forces. The recapture of strategic locations, including Khartoum International Airport and the presidential palace, was achieved despite the persistent presence of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in other parts of the country.

The conflict, now nearing its second year, has caused extensive humanitarian suffering. Around 13 million people have been displaced, and the death toll is estimated to be as high as 150,000. The RSF, despite losing ground in the capital, continues to control significant regions in the west, notably Darfur, where they are reportedly establishing a counter-government.

Celebrations erupted among civilians in Khartoum following the military's advances. However, analysts urge caution, highlighting that the conflict is far from over, with RSF fighters retreating to their strongholds and forming new alliances in southern Sudan.

The international community remains concerned about the ongoing humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to prevent further escalation. Accusations of war crimes have been directed at both sides, underscoring the complex and volatile nature of the conflict. While the liberation of Khartoum is a strategic victory for the Sudanese military, the path to lasting peace and stability remains fraught with challenges.
