Hans-Eckhard Sommer, the head of Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf), has sparked significant debate with his recent proposal for a radical shift in asylum policy. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, under whose jurisdiction Bamf falls, firmly rejected Sommer's proposal, maintaining that the right to asylum is non-negotiable for the SPD.
Sommer also suggested reforms to international agreements like the Geneva Refugee Convention, proposing restrictions on the principle of non-refoulement. He believes the current EU asylum system fails to address the root issues and calls for a new protective framework with substantial humanitarian quotas.
