In the latest survey conducted by Infratest dimap for Saarländischer Rundfunk, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Saarland has regained its lead over the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The poll, released on Wednesday, shows the SPD, led by Minister-President Anke Rehlinger, at 30%, while the CDU trails slightly with 27%. This marks a shift from the previous autumn poll, where the CDU was ahead.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) stands at 17%, showcasing potential growth compared to the 2022 election results. The Left Party and the Greens would both surpass the five-percent hurdle, securing their positions in the state parliament with 8% and 6%, respectively. Conversely, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Family Party (BSW) would not enter parliament.
A coalition between the SPD and CDU would be the only viable governing alliance, according to these results. The survey involved 1,132 eligible voters from Saarland, conducted between March 25 and March 28.
The 2022 state election saw the SPD emerge as a clear victor with 43.5% of the vote, allowing them to form a single-party government. The CDU had secured 28.5%, while the AfD managed 5.7%. The next state election is anticipated in the spring of 2027. Despite the political landscape, many Saarland residents remain skeptical about the region's economic prospects, fearing it lags behind in international competition.
