Following the agreement on a coalition contract between the CDU/CSU and SPD, many Germans remain skeptical about the potential for real policy changes. A recent ZDF 'Politbarometer' survey reveals that 51% of respondents doubt this coalition will make significant contributions to solving Germany's problems. Economic pessimism is particularly strong, with only 35% expecting improvements under the new government, while 44% foresee little change.

In terms of migration policy, a majority supports stricter measures, yet only 30% believe these will effectively address refugee and asylum issues. Despite promises of a policy shift from CDU leader Friedrich Merz, 64% of the population doubt that such a shift is feasible within the coalition. However, 55% of Germans support the formation of a CDU/CSU and SPD government, indicating a cautious optimism for cooperative governance.

The coalition's initial negotiations show neither party emerging as a clear victor, with 39% believing the CDU/CSU had more influence, and 36% siding with the SPD. Nonetheless, 56% of respondents are hopeful about successful collaboration between the two parties.

As for the political landscape, the CDU/CSU and SPD have seen a decline in voter support, with the AfD gaining ground. Additionally, urgent issues like Germany's water crisis appear to be insufficiently addressed in the coalition agreement, sparking concerns about long-term resource management.

These findings highlight the public's mixed feelings about the new government's potential to enact effective change, reflecting a nation watching closely as its leaders navigate complex challenges.

Police Expert Questions the Core of Merz's Migration Shift

The black-red migration plan aims to maintain the fundamental right to asylum, but to limit irregular migration, continue border controls, and expedite deportations. However, there are concerns about whether the proposed measures, such as border refusals and benefit cuts for refugees, are legally permissible and effective.
