The electronic patient record (ePA) will officially launch across Germany on April 29, as announced by Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach. This initiative follows successful pilot runs in select regions, demonstrating the technology's readiness for widespread application. By October, the use of ePA will become mandatory for healthcare providers, although patients retain the right to opt-out at any time. Since its inception in January, approximately 70 million records have been issued, marking a significant advancement in the digitization of the healthcare system.
Despite concerns raised by experts regarding technical issues and security, Lauterbach assures that ePA is designed with robust safety measures, eliminating potential vulnerabilities. The digital records will securely store vital patient information including medical reports, diagnoses, and prescriptions, accessible by authorized medical professionals, clinics, and pharmacies. Patients will have the ability to manage their access rights and upload their own documents.
