Declining Beer Production and Rising Non-Alcoholic Trends

Düsseldorf's breweries, including Füchschen and Belsen Alt, are experiencing reductions in beer production. While Füchschen and Belsen Alt are diversifying their offerings with non-alcoholic options, the premium Schlüssel-Alt maintains steady sales without growth.

Nationwide, German beer consumption has seen a significant drop, with domestic sales declining by 15.1% since 2014 and exports down by 6% over the past decade. This trend coincides with a growing health awareness among consumers, particularly younger demographics, who are increasingly opting for non-alcoholic beverages.

The rise of breweries continues, yet their numbers remain below the peak seen in 2019. As the beer market evolves, non-alcoholic alternatives are gaining traction, reflecting a shift in consumer preferences towards healthier lifestyle choices. This change highlights a pivotal moment for the brewing industry, as it adapts to meet the demands of a more health-conscious public.

Beer: NRW Breweries Produce Less - Also in Düsseldorf?

The Düsseldorf house breweries Füchschen, Belsen Alt and Schlüssel-Alt are recording declines in beer production. While Füchschen and Belsen Alt are introducing non-alcoholic variants, the sales of the high-quality and higher-priced Schlüssel-Alt remain stable, without growth but also without a minus. The Uerige brewery produces around 20,000 hectoliters of beer per year.

German Beer Is No Longer So Popular

Beer exports from Germany fell by six percent in 2024 compared to 2014, to 1.45 billion liters, while domestic sales fell by 15.1 percent to 6.8 billion liters. More than half of the exported beer varieties went to EU member states. Despite an increase in the number of breweries to 1,459 in 2023, their number has been declining continuously since the peak of 1,552 in 2019. The release of the data coincides with the "Beer Day", which commemorates the purity law of 1516.

German beer sales down at home and abroad

German beer exports have declined by 6% over the past 10 years, while domestic beer consumption has fallen by 15.1% since 2014. Exports now make up 17.6% of beer sales, up from 16.1% in 2014. The number of breweries in Germany has increased, but is still lower than the peak in 2019. The decline in beer consumption is attributed to a growing awareness of the negative health impacts of alcohol, leading to a rise in non-alcoholic beer sales.
