Call to End Russian LNG Imports

Environmental groups in Germany and Ukraine are urging Chancellor Friedrich Merz to halt the importation of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) by the federal company Sefe. Despite promises to phase out Russian gas, Sefe continues to buy record amounts, raising concerns about funding Russia's war in Ukraine.

The activists also oppose the commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, as it would undermine climate goals and support aggression. The EU aims to eliminate remaining Russian gas imports by 2027, although legal and economic obstacles remain.

With 19% of the EU's gas still sourced from Russia, the urgency for decisive action grows, calling for a complete embargo on Russian gas supplies.
