Germany's Growing Reliance on AI Sparks Concerns
A recent survey by Bitkom highlights the rapid adoption of generative AI in Germany, with two-thirds of the population now using tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. This marks a significant increase from 40% last summer.
Despite this growth, many Germans express concerns over reliance on foreign AI providers, particularly from the USA and China. Bitkom President Ralf Wintergerst emphasizes the need for Germany to develop its own AI industry to ensure technological sovereignty.
The study reveals that 68% of respondents believe Germany is overly dependent on foreign AI, and 53% urge the government to prioritize AI in economic policies. Although most Germans see AI as a key future technology, 28% still consider it overrated.
There is a strong desire for AI applications in areas like administration and healthcare, with many preferring domestic solutions. However, the market is currently dominated by major US companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google.
