German Labor Minister Bärbel Bas has proposed a significant reform to the country’s pension system by including civil servants, self-employed individuals, and politicians in the statutory pension insurance scheme. This initiative aims to enhance the financial stability of the pension fund as demographic changes strain current resources. Bas argues that expanding the contributor base is essential to sustain the system in the face of an aging population.
The proposal includes maintaining the pension level at 48% until 2031, a target enshrined in the coalition agreement between the SPD and CDU. While the idea of linking retirement age to life expectancy was dismissed by Bas due to diverse occupational demands, she emphasizes the need for robust economic and employment policies to ensure more people contribute to social insurance.
However, the suggestion has encountered resistance. The German Civil Servants Association (dbb) vehemently opposes it, labeling it a 'compulsory unitary insurance' and citing potential high costs associated with such a transition. The dbb's chairman, Silverbach, expressed concerns about the financial implications of overhauling the existing system.
Despite the opposition, Bas’s call for reform has found some support. Sahra Wagenknecht, a prominent political figure, supports the broader contribution base but criticizes the proposal as mere political posturing unless immediate steps are taken. She urges the government to begin by ensuring all new ministers and parliamentarians participate in the pension scheme.
