German Foreign Minister Advocates Peace in Israel

During his inaugural visit to Israel, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the necessity of a political resolution for the Gaza Strip conflict. Wadephul called for Israel to engage in negotiations for a ceasefire and underscored the importance of reconstructing Gaza without Hamas' influence. Advocating for a two-state solution, he cautioned against unlawful settlement construction and premature recognition of a Palestinian state, which could impede progress.

Wadephul met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, affirming the strong relations between Germany and Israel, while also addressing concerns over Israel's military strategy in Gaza. He proposed a political process as essential, warning that a purely military approach would not suffice. During his visit, Wadephul toured the Arrow 3 missile defense system and interacted with families of hostages held by Hamas, some of whom are German citizens.

In a symbolic gesture, Wadephul visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, reflecting on the enduring responsibility Germany bears towards Israel. He also committed to discussing humanitarian aid efforts for Gaza with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
