Elon Musk, the high-profile tech billionaire known for his ventures Tesla and SpaceX, is at the center of a heated debate regarding substantial EU funding. Over the years, Musk's companies have benefited from more than 330 million euros in subsidies from the European Union. Tesla has received 159 million euros to boost electric vehicle charging infrastructure, while SpaceX was paid 177 million euros for launching Galileo satellites.
This significant financial support has raised eyebrows, particularly among EU politicians. Daniel Freund, a German Green Party member, has been vocal in his criticism. He argues that Musk, who has shown support for controversial political figures and movements, contradicts EU values. Freund calls for an immediate cessation of payments to Musk's companies, labeling him a 'declared enemy' of the EU.
The European Commission has provided a partial justification for the funding. They cite the need to overcome delays in the launch of the European Ariane 6 rocket as a reason for SpaceX’s involvement. However, the Commission also acknowledges the necessity for further investigation and has stopped using paid services from Musk's platform X, formerly known as Twitter, since October 2023.
Amidst these controversies, Musk's financial gains from EU funds have come under scrutiny. While some view these subsidies as crucial for technological advancement and infrastructure development, others question the alignment of such investments with EU principles and values.
