Simultaneously, Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced research into Long Covid and ME/CFS. In recent discussions with Health Minister Nina Warken, she highlighted the substantial number of people affected by these conditions and the pressing demand for effective treatment options. Currently, the medical community has a limited understanding of these syndromes, particularly ME/CFS, which has been largely overlooked despite its prevalence among Long Covid patients.
Patients with ME/CFS face numerous hurdles, including unknowledgeable healthcare providers and skeptical insurance companies across Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. Recent studies in Austria have uncovered significant shortcomings in care, while patients in Switzerland often endure lengthy travel for assessments. Additionally, many in Germany confront legal disputes regarding their conditions. The increase in ME/CFS cases since the onset of the pandemic presents new obstacles for those affected, underscoring the necessity for comprehensive support and understanding in the healthcare system.
