Facing a multitude of internal and international challenges, Merz expressed confidence that these could be overcome through collective effort and resilience. A central theme of his address was the economic rejuvenation of Germany, aiming to transform the nation into a "growth locomotive" by reducing bureaucracy, improving infrastructure, and lowering energy costs.
Merz highlighted plans to expand the Bundeswehr into Europe's strongest military force, a strategic move in response to rising security threats, particularly from Russia. This ambition is supported by constitutional reforms allowing increased defense spending. Merz pledged continued support for Ukraine, underscoring Germany’s commitment to not becoming a direct party in the conflict.
Domestically, the Chancellor outlined intentions for economic reforms, including tax relief and investments in infrastructure. He also addressed the minimum wage, advocating for its increase to 15 euros by 2026, albeit not through legislative mandate. On migration, Merz reaffirmed adherence to European laws while managing the inflow of asylum seekers.
Internationally, Merz called for unity among Western allies in negotiations with Russia and emphasized the importance of maintaining strong transatlantic partnerships. He also reiterated Germany’s unwavering support for Israel and condemned antisemitism within the country.
Despite his ambitious plans, Merz’s speech received mixed reactions. Critics from various political factions voiced concerns over the social implications of his policies and the clarity of his climate strategy. Nonetheless, Merz’s declaration sets a bold and transformative agenda for Germany's future.
