New Rules for Electricity Provider Switching

Starting June 6, 2025, consumers will benefit from a streamlined process for switching electricity providers, as changes mandate that transitions must occur within 24 hours on business days. This shift is designed to boost competition and protect consumers from falling into costly default supply arrangements.

The Market Location Identification Number (MaLo-ID) will become essential for the switch, emphasizing the need for users to safeguard this information. However, the new regulations will eliminate the option for retroactive contract cancellations, which may pose challenges during relocations.

Additionally, consumers are advised to exercise caution with door-to-door and telephone sales, as unwanted contracts can quickly become binding. With the potential to save up to 43% on electricity costs, households currently in expensive default tariffs should consider switching.

This change aims to empower consumers, encouraging them to seek better rates and avoid overspending on their energy bills.
