In the early months of 2025, Germany has seen a significant increase in deportations. The federal government reports a record high of 6,151 deportations in the first quarter, marking a 28.4% rise compared to the previous year. This trend is expected to continue under the Union-led government.
Most deportations occurred via air travel, involving 5,216 individuals, with the remainder occurring by land and sea. The primary destinations included Turkey, Georgia, France, Spain, and Serbia. Additionally, deportations to crisis-hit nations like Iraq and Iran were also carried out.
Critics have expressed concerns over the government's approach, describing it as inhumane and pointing out the separation of families and the deportation of sick individuals. The government's firm stance, however, suggests a further intensification of deportations.
The financial implications of these operations are considerable. A significant portion of deportations involved expensive charter flights, partially funded by the EU's Frontex agency. Notably, around 1,700 deportations were Dublin transfers, where individuals were sent to other EU countries.
The Left Party has been vocal in its criticism, describing the measures as brutal and lacking empathy. They highlight the challenges and dangers faced by deportees in their countries of origin, particularly those sent to Turkey. Despite these criticisms, the government defends its actions as necessary policy measures in managing migration.
