France's New Smoking Ban to Protect Children
The French government has implemented a smoking ban in public areas, including parks and near schools, aimed at safeguarding children from tobacco smoke. Health Minister Catherine Vautrin emphasized that the right to clean air for children supersedes the freedom to smoke in these environments.
Effective July, the ban will cover locations frequented by minors, such as beaches and bus stops. Violators may face fines of up to 135 euros.
While smoking is still permitted in outdoor dining areas, the government plans to regulate nicotine levels and flavor options in e-cigarettes to enhance public health. This initiative is part of a broader campaign against tobacco use, which claims 75,000 lives annually in France.
