Germany Considers Mandatory Elements in Military Service

Germany is poised to revisit its military service model amid increasing concerns over national security and infrastructure protection. Major General Andreas Henne, commander of the Homeland Defense Division, has expressed doubts about the sustainability of a purely voluntary military service. The current strategy involves recruiting volunteers, but Henne warns that this may soon reach its limits as the need for personnel grows.

Henne highlights the importance of protecting critical infrastructure and suggests that mandatory elements in military service may become inevitable. The Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, aims to have over 200,000 active soldiers by 2031. To achieve this, the military must consider incorporating conscription elements into their service model.

The Union party supports introducing compulsory service if volunteer numbers fall short. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is considering a model inspired by Sweden, which could be implemented as early as this year. This approach aims to train reservists who would participate regularly in exercises, ensuring adequate defense capabilities.

Henne emphasizes the necessity of a robust military to deter potential threats and maintain defense readiness. He argues that the current volunteer-based system may not suffice to meet the required personnel numbers. As geopolitical tensions rise, there is a pressing demand for 100,000 additional soldiers by the decade's end.
