Cyprus Grapples with Illegal Dumping Challenges

Cyprus is struggling with illegal waste dumping despite EU efforts to mitigate the issue. The European Union has set a target to reduce landfilled municipal waste to less than 10% by 2035. However, illegal landfills remain a persistent problem on the island.

Local NGOs, like Friends of the Earth Cyprus, express concerns over the environmental and health impacts of these dumps. The Cypriot government is aware of its shortcomings in waste management and is planning to enhance recycling infrastructure.

Plans include establishing 50 new 'green points' for waste sorting. Although some municipalities have achieved partial success in waste reduction, more robust action is needed.

Proposed solutions involve better waste disposal infrastructure, increased enforcement, and citizen engagement in recycling efforts. While the government acknowledges the issue, overcoming these challenges requires significant commitment to change.
