Germany's Defense Spending Set to Reach 3.5% of GDP by 2029

Germany is poised for a significant increase in defense spending, as Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil outlines plans to elevate defense expenditure to 3.5 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2029. This ambitious move marks a substantial jump from the current 2.4 percent, aligning with efforts to meet NATO's financial expectations and addressing security concerns.

The proposed increment in defense spending will see Germany's budget balloon to 152.8 billion euros by 2029. To accommodate such growth, the government anticipates borrowing 121.2 billion euros, pushing total new debt to over 470 billion euros by the end of the decade. This dramatic rise in spending and borrowing is facilitated by an exemption from the country's debt brake, allowing allocations towards both external and internal security.

Public opinion appears favorable, with a significant majority supporting the increase in defense expenditure. A recent poll indicates that 66 percent of the population endorses the doubling of defense funding, recognizing the potential threats from geopolitical tensions, particularly concerning Russia. Such support provides a strong mandate for the government amid international negotiations.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has described the defense spending goals as a 'quantum leap,' with member states, including Spain, negotiating to meet these expectations despite initial resistance. As the alliance aims for a collective target between three to five percent of GDP, individual countries are working to align their budgets accordingly.

The German government's plan reflects a broader, strategic shift in priorities, emphasizing military readiness and collective security within NATO's framework.
