Hungary Threatens Criminal Charges for Participation in Banned Pride Parade

The Hungarian government has issued a stern warning to EU representatives about participating in the Budapest Pride Parade, which has been banned by law. Justice Minister Bence Tuzson emphasized that joining the parade, deemed illegal under recent legislation, would constitute a criminal act. Participants risk fines of up to 500 euros, while organizers or those encouraging participation could face a year in prison.

The ban is rooted in a law passed by the Hungarian Parliament, targeting gatherings that contravene the country's LGBTQ legislation. These laws, part of a broader strategy by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's nationalist government, are justified under the guise of "child protection." Specifically, a 2021 law forbids the depiction of homosexuality to minors.

Despite the ban, the city of Budapest had announced its intention to host the parade, opposing the government's restrictions. This has led to widespread protests in the capital, with large numbers of demonstrators expressing discontent over the limitations imposed on LGBTQ rights.

The ban has sparked international criticism. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged Hungarian authorities to lift the prohibition, stressing that the EU champions equality and non-discrimination. Her call reflects the sentiments of hundreds of EU parliamentarians who support the event.
