Spain urges EU to suspend Israel agreement amid Gaza crisis

The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip has intensified political tensions between Israel and the European Union. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called on European partners to suspend their association agreement with Israel, citing a "catastrophic genocide situation" in Gaza. Sánchez's appeal is based on a report by the European External Action Service, which suggests potential violations of human rights obligations by Israel.

The EU-Israel association agreement, established in 2000, mandates respect for human rights as a foundation of the relationship. Despite Sánchez's urging, the EU summit in Brussels did not reach a consensus to suspend the agreement. Some EU countries, such as Germany, oppose a suspension, while others have pushed for a review of the agreement due to Israel's blockade of aid to Gaza.

International organizations have accused Israel of using starvation as a weapon against Palestinians. The conflict in Gaza escalated following a large-scale attack by Hamas on Israel in October 2023.
