Deutsche Bahn plans to cut 21,000 long-distance train seats by 2036

Deutsche Bahn, Germany's main railway company, is set to significantly reduce its long-distance travel offerings. According to a report from "Spiegel," the company plans to cut approximately 21,000 seats from its current total of 265,000 by the year 2036. This reduction will predominantly impact Intercity trains, where nearly half of the existing 55,000 seats may be eliminated. Additionally, several models of high-speed trains, including ICE3 and ICE-T, are expected to be decommissioned or sold.

These measures are part of a strategy to save costs and avoid potential EU state aid investigations. The proposed cuts have sparked criticism from politicians across the spectrum, who deem the plans perplexing and counterproductive to the needs of travelers. Amidst these reductions, Deutsche Bahn is also introducing an appealing offer for young travelers. During weekends in July, those aged 26 and under can purchase a flat-rate ticket for unlimited travel on long-distance trains. This initiative aims to attract younger passengers despite the overarching cuts in service capacity.
