The recent recommendation by Germany's independent Minimum Wage Commission to increase the minimum wage to 14.60 euros by 2027 has sparked a lively debate among various industries and political factions. The retail sector, represented by the German Retail Association (HDE), voiced strong opposition, claiming that such an increase threatens numerous jobs, particularly in retail. HDE President Alexander von Preen criticized the decision as being politically pressured and called for politics to stay out of wage negotiations.
In parallel, the agricultural sector, led by Farmers' President Joachim Rukwied, is pushing for exemptions for seasonal workers, arguing that the minimum wage hike could severely impact agriculture. Rukwied has long warned about the detrimental effects a 15-euro minimum wage could have on farming, fearing it would jeopardize the domestic production of fruits and vegetables.
The logistics sector also expressed concerns, pointing out the economic challenges businesses are already facing and how the rise in minimum wage could further strain them. Their stance is supported by the construction industry, which fears increased labor costs could drive up overall building expenses.
Despite these concerns, some economists and political figures support the proposed minimum wage increase. The SPD, although critical of the compromise, has been urged by leaders like DGB Chair Yasmin Fahimi to back the decision, emphasizing the importance of raising the wage floor and achieving 60% of the median wage by 2027. SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf also encouraged acceptance of this resolution, seeing it as a balanced outcome of negotiations between employers and employees.
