Study Warns US Aid Cuts Could Lead to 14 Million Deaths by 2030
A recent study published in The Lancet raises alarming concerns about the impact of significant cuts to US development aid, warning that over 14 million people, including more than 4.5 million children under five, could die by 2030. These cuts, initiated under former President Donald Trump, have resulted in an 83% reduction in USAID programs, historically vital in reducing mortality rates in developing countries.
USAID funding has previously prevented 91 million deaths by supporting healthcare and nutrition programs. The study highlights that the risk of preventable deaths, such as from AIDS, was significantly reduced in countries receiving aid.
Former US Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush have criticized the cuts, describing them as a severe setback. The international community is urged to reconsider these reductions, as they could reverse decades of progress in global health.
