The European Union has approved its 18th sanctions package against Russia in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This new set of measures aims to further restrict Russia's economic capabilities, particularly in the oil and financial sectors. A key component of the sanctions is the reduction of the price cap on Russian oil exports, which is intended to diminish Moscow's revenue from its energy sector. Additionally, the sanctions target Russia's so-called shadow fleet, a group of vessels used to circumvent previous restrictions.
A significant aspect of the package is the prevention of reactivating the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which have been damaged and would otherwise allow Russia substantial income through gas exports. The agreement on this comprehensive sanctions package was reached after overcoming a blockade by Slovakia, which had concerns due to its existing energy contracts. Through concessions, Slovakia's objections were addressed, allowing the EU to present a united front.
