Can Video Identification Revive Use of Electronic Patient Files in Germany?
Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) aims to simplify access to electronic patient files (ePA) by reintroducing video identification. This method was previously halted due to security concerns, as researchers exploited it to create unauthorized patient files.
TK's CEO, Jens Baas, is proposing a fully digital, PIN-free video identification process to enhance user experience. Currently, while 70 million policyholders have registered for the ePA, only 750,000 actively utilize it.
The higher security standards for health data compared to online banking underscore the importance of safe access methods. Additionally, challenges persist in regions like Schleswig-Holstein, where only 0.5% of insured individuals engage with the ePA, highlighting the need for further development to ensure the system delivers tangible benefits.
The press radar on this topic:
Still used cautiously: TK wants to help the e-file succeed with simple identification
