Breakthrough Turns Skin Cells into Fertilizable Human Eggs at Oregon University

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have made significant strides in reproductive technology by successfully creating fertilizable human eggs from skin cells. Utilizing Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT), the team, led by Shoukhrat Mitalipov, transformed adult skin cells into functional gametes.

This innovative technique not only addresses infertility but also offers potential pathways for same-sex couples to have genetically related children. The study showcases the ability to mimic meiosis through careful reprogramming, producing eggs with the correct chromosomal makeup.
