EU Aims to End Russian Gas Dependence by 2027

The European Union has set a clear objective to end its dependency on Russian gas by the close of 2027. This decision, reached between the EU Commission and Parliament, includes a complete cessation of pipeline gas imports, with limited exceptions for landlocked countries.

From January 2027, imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) will also be restricted. The EU's commitment to energy independence is underscored by plans for Hungary and Slovakia to develop transition strategies.

Despite these changes, Russia is expected to maintain significant revenue from energy supplies to the EU. This pivotal agreement marks a historic shift in Europe's energy policy, aiming to diversify sources and enhance security through increased LNG supplies from nations like the USA, Canada, and various African countries.
