Israel Calls for General Strike to Demand Hostage Release
Israel's largest trade union federation, Histadrut, has called for a general strike in support of the release of the remaining hostages in the Gaza Strip. Opposition leader Jair Lapid and Defense Minister Joav Gallant have joined the demands.
The Israeli government is accused of preventing an agreement with Hamas to release the hostages. After the discovery of the killed hostages, including the Israeli-American dual citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin and Carmel Gat, the sister-in-law of the German-Israeli Yarden Roman-Gat who was released in November, Chancellor Scholz expressed shock.
The controversial Philadelphi Corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border is a central point of contention in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas, who had kidnapped five of the hostages during the attack on the Nova Music Festival in southern Israel.
The strike has disrupted air travel, closed banks and shopping centers, and caused disruptions in public transportation. The strike has received widespread support, with massive protests taking place in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
The Israeli labor court has ordered an end to the strike, but tensions remain high as the demand for the release of the hostages continues.
