Tensions Ignite at Inaugural Session of Thuringian Parliament

The Thuringian state parliament convened for its first session in Erfurt, just weeks after the election, setting the stage for significant political tension. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) emerged as the strongest faction, leading to a contentious battle over the parliament's leadership.

The AfD nominated Wiebke Muhsal, who has a past conviction for fraud, for the role of parliamentary president. This nomination was met with strong opposition from the CDU, Left, SPD, and BSW, who unanimously rejected her candidacy.

The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified the AfD as right-wing extremist, adding to the controversy. The CDU proposed Thadäus König for the same position and suggested amending the rules of procedure to allow candidates from all factions to be considered, aiming to prevent the AfD from securing the parliament's top post.

During the session, AfD’s Jürgen Treutler repeatedly interrupted proceedings, emphasizing the party’s right to the presidency as the largest faction. His actions and statements received sharp criticism from other parties, who questioned his impartiality.

Minister-President Bodo Ramelow also criticized the AfD's approach, accusing it of undermining constitutional principles. The session, marked by multiple interruptions and heated exchanges, underscored the deep divisions within the newly formed parliament.
