Saxony Takes Charge in Ministerpräsidentenkonferenz
Saxony is set to address the financial distress of municipalities as it assumes the chair of the Ministerpräsidentenkonferenz (MPK). Ministerpräsident Michael Kretschmer criticized the federal government's lack of funding for new service laws, stressing that cities and towns are financially overwhelmed.
He emphasized the need for fair financial distribution and questioned the necessity of certain services. Saxony's chairmanship will also focus on migration policy and internal security, with Kretschmer advocating for close cooperation among states to tackle numerous challenges.
The chairmanship transitions from Hesse, whose Ministerpräsident, Boris Rhein, highlighted achievements in migration policy, including the introduction of a payment card for refugees. The MPK under Hesse also made recommendations for economic and energy policy reforms.
The next annual conference will be held in Leipzig at the end of October.
