This package includes significant reforms aimed at tightening security measures across the nation. These reforms are designed to enhance the ability of law enforcement agencies to respond effectively to threats.
A pivotal aspect of the package is the proposed benefit cuts for migrants who are required to leave the country. This measure aims to streamline the deportation process and ensure that rejected asylum seekers do not receive state benefits if another European country is willing to take them back. This part of the package specifically targets cases like the suspect in the Solingen attack, who was supposed to be deported to Bulgaria.
The agreement on these measures came after internal discussions within the coalition, particularly involving input from the SPD and the Greens. The package has already seen an unusual introduction during the budget week and is expected to be treated in the Interior Committee before being adopted by the Bundestag and Bundesrat. The coalition's vice-chairs, Dirk Wiese, Konstantin von Notz, and Konstantin Kuhle, have played a crucial role in finalizing the details after consultations with experts.
Germany's Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, has expressed her support for the package, describing it as the right response to the threat of radical Islamist terrorism. These changes are set to be discussed in the Bundestag soon, with the Bundesrat expected to deliberate on them by mid-October.
