Diplomatic relations between India and Canada have significantly deteriorated following the controversial death of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Both countries expelled each other's top diplomats amidst accusations of Indian governmental involvement in Nijjar's assassination. Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and a prominent figure in the Khalistan movement, was accused by India of terrorist activities.
The situation escalated further as Canadian authorities, supported by evidence, alleged that India was involved in intimidation, harassment, and criminal activities against the Sikh community in Canada. This community, which is the largest outside India, has been vocal about the Khalistan cause. Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has openly accused India of orchestrating the killing, a claim India staunchly denies, labeling the allegations as politically motivated.
In response to these allegations, India and Canada have not only expelled diplomats but have also threatened to revoke diplomatic immunity. This diplomatic rift has brought their long-standing partnership in trade and security to a new low, with both nations remaining steadfast in their positions, further complicating the resolution of these tensions.
