Italy has initiated a new approach to handling asylum seekers by transferring them to centers in Albania. This marks the first wave of migrants, consisting of 16 individuals, who were initially rescued by the Italian navy. They are part of a broader group of about 1,000 migrants who arrived on the island of Lampedusa. This operation is the result of an agreement between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. The deal, which costs Italy 160 million euros annually, aims to process asylum requests outside the European Union, a proposal that has sparked significant debate.
The migrants will be accommodated in specially constructed reception centers in Shengjin and Gjader, where their applications will be assessed based on EU standards. This initiative is part of a broader European strategy to deter irregular migration and manage asylum processes more effectively. Despite the pushback, Italian authorities, backed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, view this move as a necessary step to curb the increasing number of arrivals and set a precedent for other EU nations.
