EU Commission Faces Challenges in Leadership Appointments

After weeks of gridlock, the European Parliament is nearing an agreement on the appointment of vice-presidents for the upcoming EU Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen. The center-right European People's Party (EPP), Social Democrats, and Liberals have reportedly agreed to endorse all nominated vice-presidents, including the contentious figures Teresa Ribera of Spain and Italy's Raffaele Fitto.

The Social Democrats, Liberals, and Greens have vehemently opposed Fitto's nomination, citing his ties with far-right factions. Conversely, the EPP has resisted Ribera's appointment, holding her accountable for the inadequate response to recent floods in Valencia, Spain. The EPP demanded Ribera address these issues before the Spanish parliament, a condition for their support.

The proposed compromise involves mutual concessions, with the EPP agreeing to back Ribera and the Social Democrats relenting on Fitto. This agreement extends to confirming other vice-presidential nominees, including Oliver Varhelyi, a figure closely associated with Hungary's Viktor Orban.

Despite the deal, the Social Democrats express dissatisfaction, viewing it as yielding to conservative pressures. They emphasize the need for a definitive pro-European alliance, excluding far-right influence. Tensions persist among Spanish conservatives, who remain opposed to Ribera's nomination.

This political tussle has delayed the confirmation of other vice-presidents, risking the scheduled December 1 commencement of the new Commission's operations. A two-thirds majority approval by relevant parliamentary committees is crucial to proceeding.
