In a notable shift in consumer preferences, confectionery has overtaken sausage as the most popular food in Germany. In 2024, Germans are expected to spend an average of 245 euros per person on sweets such as chocolate and pralines.

This change reflects a broader trend toward vegetarian and vegan diets, contributing to the decline in sausage consumption. The confectionery market is thriving, with sales reaching 20.7 billion euros, bolstered by higher cocoa prices and an expanding variety of vegan options.

Dairy products and eggs rank third, followed by meat, vegetables, baked goods, cheese, fruit, frozen foods, and wine. Despite higher consumer prices, the confectionery sector remains robust, driven by both service counter and self-service sweets, as well as sweet and savory baked goods.

Meanwhile, North Rhine-Westphalia saw a slight decrease in chocolate production in the first half of 2024, yet consumer demand for confectionery continues to grow, indicating a sustained fondness for sweet indulgences among Germans.
