Syria's Path to Unification and Reconstruction

Following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, Syria's new leadership, led by Ahmed al-Scharaa of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), is striving to bring unity and stability to the nation. The central goal is to integrate all militias into a single national army, ensuring state control over arms. This effort is intended to stabilize a country ravaged by nearly 14 years of civil war.

During a press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, al-Scharaa emphasized the dissolution of armed groups in favor of joining the state military forces. Concurrently, Fidan advocated for the lifting of sanctions against Syria, urging the international community to support the nation's reconstruction efforts.

The situation in northern Syria remains tense, with ongoing conflicts between Kurdish forces, particularly the YPG, and pro-Turkish militias. Turkey views the YPG as an extension of the PKK, a designated terrorist organization, and continues military operations in these areas. Despite Turkey's support for HTS, Fidan clarified that the overthrow of Assad was a Syrian victory, not facilitated by Turkish intervention.

HTS aims to present itself as a unifying and moderate force, seeking to protect diverse ethnic and religious communities within Syria. Diplomatic engagements with regional and international actors, including Jordan, Qatar, and the United States, indicate a concerted effort to gain recognition and build alliances.

The future of Kurdish autonomy is uncertain as Syrian leadership seeks to reestablish control over all territories. Efforts to de-weaponize the economy and rebuild public institutions are underway, but challenges remain. The international community's response, particularly regarding sanctions and support for Kurdish groups, will significantly impact Syria's path to recovery and unity.
