Political Shift in Germany: SPD Drops, AfD Gains

In the latest ZDF 'Politbarometer' poll, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) has slipped to the fourth position, now trailing behind the Green Party. The SPD's support has decreased by one point to 14%, while the Greens have gained a point, reaching 15%. Meanwhile, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has made significant strides, increasing by two points to 21%, marking its highest standing in a year.

The Union, comprising the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), remains the strongest political force at 30%, despite losing one point. Potential coalition governments could include alliances between the Union and the Greens or the Union and the SPD, though collaboration with the AfD has been ruled out by major parties.

In the race for chancellor, the Green Party's candidate, Robert Habeck, has gained traction, now tied with the Union's Friedrich Merz at 27%. AfD's Alice Weidel follows with 15%, while current Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the SPD has dropped to 14%. This decline places him last among the four leading candidates.

The poll, conducted with 1,433 eligible voters, highlights shifting political dynamics in Germany. With the Bundestag elections approaching, the results signal a changing landscape. While the Union leads, the AfD's ascent challenges traditional party structures, raising questions about future political alliances and governance in Germany.
