Rising Energy Demand Driven by Air Conditioning

The global demand for energy has seen a significant increase, driven primarily by the surge in electricity consumption. Last year marked a notable 4.3 percent rise in electricity usage, largely attributed to the growing reliance on air conditioning, particularly in countries like India and China amidst extreme heat conditions. This heightened demand reflects broader trends in energy consumption, with new technologies and climate needs influencing usage patterns.

Renewable energy sources and natural gas have played a pivotal role in meeting this demand. Notably, the share of oil in the global energy mix has dropped below 30 percent for the first time, signaling a shift towards more sustainable energy solutions. The International Energy Agency reported that renewable energies and nuclear power accounted for 80 percent of the additional electricity supplied.

Despite this positive shift, the increase in energy consumption has raised concerns about carbon emissions. While CO₂ emissions rose by 0.8 percent, strategies utilizing low-emission technologies have mitigated potential increases, preventing an additional 7 percent of emissions. This dynamic highlights the dual challenge of addressing rising energy needs while also striving for sustainability.

In developed and developing regions alike, energy consumption is on the rise. The transportation sector's electrification and air conditioning demands are key contributors to this trend.
