Iran Halts IAEA Cooperation Amid Military Strikes and Rising Nuclear Tensions

Iran has officially suspended its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), following a parliamentary decision and subsequent approval by the Guardian Council. This development comes in the wake of military attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran's nuclear facilities. The Iranian government cited the need to safeguard its rights under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, particularly concerning uranium enrichment, as a reason for this suspension.

The decision has drawn significant international attention and criticism. Germany and other European nations have expressed deep concern, labeling Iran's move as a "devastating signal." The German government emphasized the importance of Iran's cooperation with the IAEA for a diplomatic solution and urged Tehran to reverse its decision immediately.

Israel, on the other hand, has called for the reactivation of the "Snapback" mechanism, which would reinstate various sanctions against Iran. The Israeli government argues that these measures are necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a claim Iran denies.

The recent military conflict between Iran and Israel, which included US involvement, led to significant damage to Iran's nuclear infrastructure. Although the Pentagon estimates that the attacks have set back Iran’s nuclear program by up to two years, experts caution that Iran could resume uranium enrichment within months.

The suspension of cooperation with the IAEA has also sparked criticism within Iran, with officials accusing the agency of remaining silent during the attacks. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi’s request to inspect damaged sites has been rejected by Iran, further escalating tensions.
