The Berlin Process: A Bridge to EU Integration for the Western Balkans

The Berlin Process, initiated by Germany in 2014, serves as a vital platform to bring six Western Balkan nations - Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia - closer to the European Union. This initiative underscores the EU's commitment to fostering regional cooperation and addressing geopolitical challenges, including countering Russian influence.

The annual summit, attended by heads of state from the Western Balkans and representatives from nine EU member states, focuses on establishing a regional market and mobility agreement. Despite these efforts, integration into the EU remains a complex and gradual process. The last accession was Croatia's in 2013, and the path has been fraught with diplomatic hurdles, such as Bulgaria's veto against North Macedonia's bid due to ongoing disputes.

Albania has made significant strides, launching its EU membership negotiations and working towards alignment with EU foreign policy. However, internal political turmoil and corruption present challenges. The EU has earmarked €6 billion to facilitate reforms in the Balkans, crucial for their integration journey.

While the Berlin Process aims to accelerate EU accession, the path is impeded by regional tensions, notably between Serbia and Kosovo, and the influence of external powers. The European Union remains hopeful that these nations can become members by 2030, provided they adhere to necessary reforms and engage in constructive dialogue.

The Berlin Process is more than a diplomatic initiative; it is a strategic effort to integrate the Western Balkans into the EU fold, ensuring stability and prosperity in a region of significant geopolitical importance.

Bulgaria not an unconditional supporter of Western Balkans’ EU integration
