The United States has introduced a proposal aimed at establishing a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, amidst escalating tensions in Lebanon. This proposal, communicated to Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, suggests a temporary cessation of hostilities for 60 days. During this period, Lebanon would reposition its troops to the southern border near Israel. The plan is built on the foundation of the 2006 Resolution 1701.
In recent weeks, the conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with 3,386 deaths and over 14,000 injuries in Lebanon since October 2023. Israeli airstrikes continue to hit key areas in Beirut, causing extensive damage and loss of life. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has launched attacks on Israel in support of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israel insists on retaining the right to respond to any threats posed by Hezbollah.
The US proposal has been discussed with various Lebanese officials, including Prime Minister Najib Mikati. If accepted, the ceasefire would be accompanied by a joint declaration from Washington and Paris. The plan also involves international oversight to ensure compliance with Resolution 1701, demanding Hezbollah's withdrawal beyond the Litani River.
Despite the ongoing violence, diplomatic efforts persist. The visit of Iranian advisor Ali Larijani to Beirut highlighted Iran's support for Lebanon and its resistance groups. Meanwhile, the international community, including Canada, has expressed concerns over worsening conditions in the region, particularly in Gaza.
The Lebanese government is cautiously optimistic about reaching a ceasefire agreement with Israel. However, tensions remain high as both sides weigh their options. The success of the US proposal hinges on cooperation from involved parties and adherence to international resolutions.
