Severe Snowfall Hits South Korea

South Korea is currently grappling with unprecedented heavy snowfall, marking the third largest accumulation on record for the month of November. In Seoul, residents have seen over 40 centimeters of snow, while areas outside the capital report up to 45 centimeters.

Tragically, this extreme weather has claimed at least four lives, primarily due to collapses of structures like tents and multiple traffic accidents. The impacts extend beyond casualties, as more than 140 flights have been canceled, and numerous ferry services have been suspended, disrupting travel across the nation.

The phenomenon has been attributed to a combination of warmer seawater and cold air currents, resulting in a climatic event that has also affected neighboring North Korea, which received over 10 centimeters of snow. In response to the crisis, authorities have deployed around 11,000 personnel and 20,000 pieces of equipment to clear the snow in Seoul alone.

Despite the efforts, power outages and significant traffic disruptions persist, highlighting the challenges faced by the region in coping with this severe winter weather.
